NORTH GRENVILLE, ON – Mayor Nancy Peckford issued the following statement for National Indigenous History Month:
National Indigenous History Month is recognized annually across Canada for the month of June.
North Grenville’s Municipal Council would like to take this opportunity to recognize the unique heritage, cultures and traditions of First Nations, Inuit and Metis peoples across Ontario and Canada.
National Indigenous History Month is an important opportunity for Canadians to learn more and deepen our understanding of, Indigenous peoples' distinct cultures, histories, customs, spiritualities, and languages, as well as how their contributions and achievements have and continue to, shape our country.
To that end, the Municipality will be sharing weekly posts featuring different themes that highlight various aspects of Indigenous history, cultures and perspectives.
Indigenous Peoples continue to inspire us with their strength and resiliency – often when facing incredible obstacles – including the tragic and multi-generational impact of Residential Schools.
The Municipality acknowledges National Indigenous History Month as we continue to work towards meaningful reconciliation.
As of 2022, Council adopted its first ever Indigenous Land Acknowledgement that is read at the beginning of its Council and Advisory Committee meetings. A copy is available on our website for community groups to use.
We are also creating a Reconciliation Framework, which will be brought forward to the soon to be established Indigenous Advisory Circle, who will support the Municipality in identifying some crucial next steps, as we work towards reconciliation.
