‘Lest We Forget’ Crosswalk Dedication Ceremony

The Royal Canadian Legion - Branch 212 Kemptville invite the public to join them for the dedication ceremony for the Lest We Forget Crosswalk slated for Prescott Street was created as a symbolic tribute to Canada’s Veterans - those who have served - and those who continue to serve in our Canadian Armed Forces.

A Veterans contingent will form up on the east sidewalk of Prescott Street at Reuben Crescent South in preparation for a Veterans Walk across the Remembrance themed pedestrian crosswalk. The Veterans will then proceed along the west sidewalk of Prescott Street to the Kemptville Cenotaph site where the official ceremony will be held.

This meaningful project was graciously funded by the Municipality of North Grenville Council, reflecting the community’s deep respect and gratitude for military service in times of War and Peace.
The design features twin silhouettes of First World War soldiers standing on guard, along with the solemn inscription “Lest We Forget” placed at both ends of the crosswalk. These elements not only Honour the Fallen, but will serve as a daily reminder of the sacrifices made for the Peace and Freedom we all enjoy to this very day.

The soldier silhouettes also complement the Kemptville Cenotaph located nearby, which features a granite statue of a young soldier standing at ease. The statue portrays the typical uniform and gear worn by Canadian soldiers during the First World War, creating a visual and historical continuity between the memorials.
The red steps on a white background carry a dual symbolism:
• The red represents the blood shed in the pursuit of Peace.
• The white symbolizes Peace itself.

At the same time, red and white are Canada’s official colours, as designated by King George V in 1921, as well as being the colours of our National flag which is proudly flown throughout Canada and abroad.

The colour scheme also serves as a visual link to strengthen the connection between remembrance, our National identity, and the values that Canadians hold dear.
