North Grenville Adopts First Climate Action Plan, Setting a Path to a Stronger, More Resilient Future

North Grenville, ON – The Municipality of North Grenville has formally adopted its first Climate Action Plan, marking an important milestone in the community’s response to climate change and its commitment to long-term environmental, social, and economic resilience.

Approved by Mayor Peckford and Council, with input from community partners including Sustainable North Grenville and key Municipal Advisory Committees, the Climate Action Plan provides a structured framework to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, strengthen climate resilience, and guide decision-making across municipal operations and the broader community.

It is informed by extensive analysis of local conditions, anticipated growth, and feasible climate actions tailored to North Grenville’s rural and small-urban context.

“The Climate Action Plan is an important first step that reflects both our community’s values and the realities we face,” said Mayor Nancy Peckford. “Now the work turns to implementation - making practical, local decisions that reduce emissions, strengthen resilience, and support how our community continues to grow.”

The plan addresses emission reductions and climate adaptation measures across key sectors, including transportation, buildings and development, waste management, municipal fleets, and natural heritage.

It evaluates proposed actions against a business-as-usual forecast, helping Council and staff understand where meaningful impact can be achieved over time while remaining fiscally and operationally realistic.

The plan distinguishes between community-wide actions and corporate actions related to municipal operations. This dual approach allows the Municipality to lead by example while supporting community partners, residents, and businesses in climate-positive actions.

The Climate Action Plan is intended to be a living document. Implementation, monitoring, and future updates will allow North Grenville to respond to new data, funding opportunities, and emerging best practices, while staying aligned with community priorities and provincial and federal climate objectives.

By adopting its first Climate Action Plan, North Grenville joins municipalities across Ontario and Canada in taking a proactive, evidence-based approach to climate change that balances environmental responsibility with economic sustainability and community well-being.
