In a world that is moving so quickly, one can experience numbness about a tragedy from a distance – to see the headline, feel a moment of disbelief, sadness, even confusion, and - ultimately - have to continue on with our day.
But today, in Tumbler Ridge, there is no chance to carry on as normal. For the families affected, particularly those who have lost lives, this is a senseless and unfathomable tragedy.
As parents, grandparents, teachers, and care-givers, we expect that our schools are safe places for children and teens to learn and thrive.
Tumbler Ridge is a rural Canadian community and so is North Grenville - we are similar and we are different as well. While they may be a smaller community, much further north, and west… they no doubt share the characteristics of many small towns. Families, classmates and neighbours are well one known to each other and are connected in a myriad of ways. This tragedy is raw and deep, and will be felt across generations.
This is why today, Canadians from coast to coast to coast, including here in North Grenville, are grieving alongside the people of Tumbler Ridge. We will hold the families of Tumbler Ridge’s secondary school, their teachers, guidance councilors, principal, caregivers and the many first responders who were first to the scene, and the entire community, in our thoughts. We hope and pray that not only will the be able to grieve, but to ultimately find the hope to carry on.
